Ron Schlegel, founder of Schlegel Villages, has died, leaving the Village of Aspen Lake, Schlegel Villages, and communities across Ontario mourning the loss of a pioneering leader in seniors’ care. Schlegel passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026, according to Schlegel Villages. Born and raised on a farm near Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Ron developed the strong work ethic that would shape his life and career. As a young man, he worked in the fields and operated a straw-baling business to help fund his education. He continued farming while pursuing advanced studies, eventually earning a doctorate.

His professional interests extended well beyond agriculture. Schlegel became involved in urban development, poultry production, mental health and addiction care, seniors’ living, and research. His entrepreneurial vision ultimately helped create Schlegel Villages, which began with its first Village in Kitchener in 1991 and grew into a network focused on community, connection, and meaningful aging.

Colleagues and residents remembered Ron not only for his leadership but also for his personal warmth. He and his wife, Barb, regularly visited Schlegel Villages, speaking with residents and staff, learning their stories, and taking a genuine interest in their lives. Ron also helped establish the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, supporting research focused on healthy aging. His contributions to seniors’ care, research, and community development earned him recognition as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ron leaves a legacy centered on generosity, curiosity, community-building, and meaningful human connection. His vision of communities where people of all ages and abilities can thrive will continue through the organizations and initiatives he helped establish. Schlegel Villages and the wider seniors’ living sector have expressed condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew him.
